Garganico Sanctuary of San Michele

The Garganico Sanctuary of San Michele is one of the most authoritative and fascinating cultural heritage in the world, UNESCO heritage.

Basilica dating back to 500 AD, a unique place both for its history and for the atmosphere of strong spirituality that is felt inside, proudly guarded by the inhabitants following the apparitions of the archangel warrior.

To fuel the aura of spirituality and mystery there is the legend of the Sacred Line of San Michele, an imaginary line that would symbolize the blow of the sword that the archangel inflicted on Satan to send him back to hell and that would connect seven shrines dedicated to San Michele, from Ireland to Israel, passing through Monte Sant'Angelo.

Artistic treasure of inestimable value, with bronze doors cast in Constantinople in 1076, on behalf of the noble Pantaleone of Amalfi. The altars and the images that adorn them are carved in the same rock of the cave.

On the central altar, instead, stands the white and wonderful marble statue of Andrea Sansovino and, on the presbytery, the bishop’s chair of the twelfth century.

carved on stone.
