Campobasso (CB) - Molise

The town of Campobasso is born from a picturesque medieval nucleus from which winds the most modern and elegant nineteenth-century. The origin of the name is believed to be linked to its topographical position. Campobasso has Lombard origins and, presumably, already existed in the eighth century, as evidenced by the findings of the ancient Samnite fortification.

Later, during the Norman hegemony, the village assumed an ever increasing economic importance and managed to become the "capital" of the County under the lordship of De Molisio. In the fifteenth century the Monforte, who became feudal lords, started a golden period, characterized by the figure of Count Cola pivot of a development and expansion that will follow even under the Aragonese

The hilly location makes Campobasso a characteristic city with narrow streets, mostly staircases, that cross the historic center. On the hill where Campobasso was built, there are still the historical remains of the ancient city, such as the imposing building of the castle of Monforte and the Torre del Lupo or Torre Terzana. The Castle together with the church of S.Maria del Monte dominate a large square from which you can witness a wonderful view.
